Wondering About Montessori...

Since my brain alone can't keep up with Lorelai's demands for exploratory/ educational activities, I've been looking for some kind of learning philosophy to follow as I gather activities for Tot School. I've heard of Montessori before, but I am SO not an expert. Any mommies out there have something to say about montessori? Anyone know of a website full of ideas for activities made of objects that I already own ;) ?

well, i'm working on my degree for early childhood ed and all they teach is "High scope" curriculum. I don't like what I'm learning and think Montessori may be better. There's more structure with Montessori and I think little ones have a better chance for success in kindergarten.
The "No Child Left Behind Act" is demanding much more than High Scope has to offer.

There are varying degrees of Montessori nowadays. The strictest put little benefit in any sort of social interaction or community. The most lenient Montessori approach has been described to me as the place where grown-up hippies send their children.

Most of my European friends choose to go this route because they think that Americans focus too much on learning through play.

I don't see anything wrong with learning through play.

Good luck! Post what you find out!

I went to a Montessori school through 4th grade. It is a great way to lean and a lot like what we do with Tot school!

Who knew that deciding what's best for your own child could be so controversial? Color me hippie if you must.
